What Types of Property Are For Sale in New Zealand?

Searching for a property for sale can be an exciting time and the North and South Islands of New Zealand offer a variety of cities and towns to buy in, it's just a matter of deciding where you want to live and what sort of property you want. Here are some ideas of what you will be looking at:

If you are looking for a property that offers land you might be looking for a lifestyle block or farmlet in a more rural area. Towns in the South Island of NZ, such as Timaru, Rangiora and Greymouth, for example offer a variety of rural properties. With a lifestyle block or farmlet you can expect more land area than your average residential property, then providing you with paddocks to accommodate stock or maybe the opportunity to turn the area into an extravagant garden setting. If this sounds like an option you would like to explore and you are conducting searches on the internet, you will be searching for property for sale in the Rural or Lifestyle categories.

The Residential property market in both the North and South Islands of New Zealand consist of a number of different types of dwellings including:

Townhouses are often smaller in size and in most cases only offer 1 – 3 bedrooms. The main cities such as Auckland & Wellington (in the North Island) and Christchurch, Dunedin & Invercargill (in the South Island) are popular for these types of dwellings. Often with a townhouse you will have your neighbors sharing your driveway and you will most likely have limited land (which may well be a drawcard for you). With most townhouses you can generally expect to have a small patio area, room for your clothesline and sometimes some land out the front (dependent on how the building is situated).

Apartments are a unit within an 'apartment complex'. As these are easy to take care of and usually located within the urban areas of both the North and South Islands of NZ, this choice is often popular with executive couples, who do not have any children. In general, with an apartment you can expect 1 – 2 bedrooms with an open plan kitchen & living area and unless you are located in one of the ground level apartments, it's most likely that you will only have a balcony as your outdoor area – thus meaning that you do not have to worry about mowing lawns / tending to a garden!

Houses – Villas / Bungalows
When you are searching for a house you will come across many types of houses such as Villas, Bungalows and Character Homes to name a few. Each of these options generally relates to the style & era of the house and you can find all types of homes in all areas of New Zealand. For instance a Villa is a single storey home, often larger in size and will have features such as polished wooden floors and classic architraves & moldings in the interior. Whereas bungalows (whilst also a single storey home) are most commonly known for their verandah's expanding one side of the building.

So if you are going to search on the internet for properties for sale in New Zealand in the Residential market, you will be searching for property types such as: Residential, Apartment, House, Townhouse or Unit. Some websites also provide the search option of Home & Income – which allows you to search for rental properties to buy.

You are not limited for choice when searching for properties for sale in New Zealand and if you can not find your perfect match – why not build, there are plenty of sections for sale within a variety of settings. Many of New Zealand's real estate sites allow you to sign up for 'property alerts' or 'newsletters' which will often advise you of new listings in the specific areas & types of properties you are looking at.
